The debate over who is the greatest basketball player of all time has been on-going for years now. Some names have been mentioned many more times compared to others. However, things usually come down to two players – Michael Jordan and LeBron James.
A lot of people have shared their opinion on the subject. Some argue that Jordan was and will remain the best basketball player ever, while other claim that that title belongs to James. According to recent reports, Scottie Pippen came up with a brilliant explanation to point out the difference between Jordan and James.
What Pippen said was that Jordan was the undisputed GOAT until James came along. These two players have very similar stats. Jordan leads when it comes to the ‘NBA finals record’ category, having a 6-0 record in the finals, compared to LeBron’s 3-6 record. On the other hand, Pipper said that James’ role is different to Jordan’s, with the Bulls and Wizards not deploying him in the way LeBron’s teams have deployed him. Pippen explained it like this:
“LeBron James plays a different role from Michael Jordan as a player. He was never asked to do things that LeBron can do for his team. I had another role. For this reason, statistically, LeBron numbers are much better than Jordan. We did not use Michael to do the kind of things that the Cavs use LeBron James. That’s why you can say that the comparison is unfair.”
Just a few days back, James opened up on why he thinks he deserves the GOAT title. He said that winning a championship for the Cavaliers made him deserving of the title the greatest of all time:
“That one right there made me the greatest player of all time. That’s what I felt. I was super, super ecstatic to win one for Cleveland because of the 52-year drought. … The first wave of emotion was when everyone saw me crying. Like, that was all for 52 years of everything in sports that’s gone on in Cleveland. And then after I stopped, I was like — that one right there made you the greatest player of all time.”
LeBron James will forever be the greatest basketball player to have ever step foot on a basketball court!
